Sound Barriers: Analysis of Voice as a User Interface for Mobile Appplications and Devices

Sound Barriers, is an Open Research project, led and funded by Inglis Jane Ltd. So if you participated in the research, or want to use the research for non-commercial purposes, then request your free copy here. The aim is to answer two key questions:

  1. Has Voice as a User Interface (VUI) finally come of age?
  2. If so, what does this mean for mobile apps and devices, and for their designers, developers and users?

Our key objective for the research is that it should be of practical utility, enabling and informing the development of more usable and useful mobile apps and devices. The research included an online consumer survey as well as interviews with professionals, and was carried out between July and September 2009. The analysis includes a new user segmentation for mobile users for VUI.
